Poker is an online family of casino-based card games where players put money into an account, and with each win, the amount in that account is deducted. The basic strategy in poker is to avoid the big pots until you have quite a large bankroll; once you get one, use all the money you can to either try to win the pot for yourself (but be careful, because the odds are heavily stacked against you) or to get the big score for your casino friends. But how do you learn the basics of poker in a quick and easy way?
In a nutshell, poker is a game of chance. Every time a player folds, the card dealer will remove a number of cards from the pot, then deal out a new hand the players another fresh one. A player is said to have ‘closed their hand’ when there are no more cards left to be had in the pot. If a player has kept their hand all the way, then the dealer will reveal the worst possible hand and the player can then decide whether to bluff or not and whether they want to raise or not. The highest hand usually wins the pot.
Bluffing is the art of deceiving other players into thinking that you have a better hand than you do. For instance, if a player is playing with two jacks, one of them having a top pair, then the other may have a four of a kind, a five of a kind or a full house. By bluffing you can make it seem that you have a better hand than you do, so that the other players will fold fast and often. But as with most things in life, you can only bluff to your advantage. So learn to read your opponents and carefully consider their actions before you fold.
Once you have read their actions carefully and considering their bets, you should fold if you think you have a strong hand, otherwise continue to bet and raise. On the flop, if you think you have bet enough to take the pot on the turn, then fold and keep playing. The flop is a time when professional bluffer’s really shine. When a player has a good hand, especially on the flop, they will often be willing to call the pot on the turn if they think it is a good bet. After all, the pot is called because everyone in the table has folded, so it makes sense to call if you think the odds are great.
On the third, fourth and fifth rounds of no-limit Texas Hold’em, it is not uncommon for a player to end up betting more on the flop than they would have on the table. The reason is usually that players have gotten used to winning pots and do not realize that there is a limit to how much they can bet in a single game. Also, on those last few rounds, players usually have the fear of taking the money they have already lost back out of the pot because many people at the tables are professionals who are very good at controlling big pots. This can make people act like they have more chips than they actually do. If you are already up against this type of player, be aggressive and bet before they get a chance to play their hands.
If you are having trouble in these types of games, remember that it is okay to keep playing wild cards after you have gotten your chips in a good position. Many players in the online poker world tend to stay on the nuts and bolts, so it is sometimes helpful to keep a no-limit style around for a change. Another option is to use an ace or a king to protect a no-limit hand. You may also find that playing with multiple Aces is a good way to create some aggression. No-limit hold em is a fun game to play and can keep you from getting bored, so come up with different ways to win every round!
